MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Kim Cloutman
Manager, Corporate Media Center
Norfolk Southern

               John Osgood

Kim Matthew Cloutman is Manager of Norfolk Southern’s Corporate Media Center, located in McDonough Georgia at its 18 acre, 4 building, state of the industry, Training Center campus. He is directly involved in providing strategic communications consulting, writing, producing and directing for a growing number of annual productions (from about 20 annually in ’00 -01 to over 50 annually in ’06 –’07) In addition to a strong focus and commitment to safety and training, the center produces programs to support a wide base of corporate clients. In 2002 he developed “NS FOCUS” a quarterly employee news program, an employee communication initiative, featuring a quarterly “business focus” with the chairman and top executives, celebrating its 5th year and 20th edition in August ’07. Notable, major programs include “In Katrina’s Wake” a documentary on the company’s innovative and successful response to the disaster, delivered to all employees and shareholders via the annual report. Several productions are now posted on the NS Corp website for customers and prospective employees. Marketing and customer information programs include 5 program DVD for customers and “The World of Norfolk Southern” a corporate image presentation reflecting the dynamic corporate direction and management leading the “rail renaissance.”

In addition to production and project management, Cloutman oversees the 9 room facility including 2 edit suites, studio and equipment areas. In 2006 it converted the bulk of its program library to DVD format and has improved its media asset tracking with a searchable data base of hundreds of DVDs/compilations containing a roster of video presentations for operations, mechanical, engineering and customer service training.

Prior to joining Norfolk Southern in 2001, Cloutman managed SNET's (Southern New England Telephone’s) Creative Media Services and Video Communications Network for several years. There he produced over 65 major original productions each year, in the full range of program formats, including commercials, product introductions, documentaries, and large scale annual/marketing meetings. He concluded his tenure by completing a major redesign and rebuild of SNET’s studio production and postproduction facilities, now part of “the new AT&T”. Prior to becoming manager, Cloutman held a succession of positions at SNET including Writer, Producer/Director, Project Coordinator and Senior Producer.

Among the hundreds of programs produced, his 1990 production of "Vietnam: A Chance to Understand" received national attention and aired on Connecticut Public Television, which also aired "Success" in 1993, a series of vignettes focused on Connecticut's small businesses. In 1998 he and his production teams received 12 National awards including a series of commercials for the professional reparatory Long Wharf Theater.

Like many in the industry, Kim has a passion for music and film and is a member of The Henry Players of Henry County, contributing music, acting and video performances in 7 productions over the past 5 years. He lives with his wife and youngest daughter in Stockbridge and has two grown step children and families in Connecticut.

Cloutman is a 2 term past president of Connecticut ITVA, now the Media Communications Association, and an active member of the Connecticut Film Commission Advisory Board since '92 and a coordinator with Film Fest New Haven 2001. He developed and taught several courses: "Marketing Ideas Within Corporations," "Corporate Communication Strategies" “Corporate Structure and Corporate Cultures” and "Corporate Scriptwriting" at Southern Connecticut State University.
