AIU Meeting Recap

Posted on March 12th, 2008 by John Osgood

MCA-I Atlanta met on Thursday, February 28 at American Inter-Continental University in Buckhead.  Our host was Tom Anderson, Dean of the Media Production Department and former MCA-I Atlanta Chapter president.  We enjoyed a look at the new Grass Valley Group/Thomson Indigo HD Switcher, with its 20 inputs for ANY signal format.  It can handle Standard Def Composite, High Def SDI, FireWire, DVI and HDMI, Component, and more.

We also replayed several video modules produced by the Chapter in the 1990’s for the Annual MCA-I Video Festival “Vid Fest.”  Some of the funny moments were a “Star Trek” spoof featuring our own John Atwood’s immortal portrayal of “Captain Quirk.”

Tom Anderson and Tanya Ostrovsky (an MCA-I member who also teaches at AIU) also shared several video and music projects produced by their students.  Thank you to AIU for hosting us and to Donata Renfrow who once again provided the food.

MCA-I Atlanta February Meeting at AIU

Posted on February 18th, 2008 by John Osgood

MCA-I Atlanta will meet Thursday, February 28, at American InterContinental University (AIU) in Buckhead.  The address is 3330 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta, Georgia 30326.  You may also call 1-888-591-7888.

Tom Anderson, a former president of the Atlanta Chapter, will be our host.  Tom is a longtime member of MCA-I.  The tentative agenda includes networking with food and beverages from 6pm - 7pm, followed by the meeting and presentation from 7pm - 8pm.

The new Grass Valley Group/Thomson Indigo HD Switcher will be on display.  It features 20 inputs for any signal format, including Standard Def Composite, High-Def SDI, FireWire, DVI and HDMI, component, and more.  The new GVI Indigo allows input directly to various resolutions of DVI and HDMI, as well as SDI and SD.  It also has touch screen commands for ADO 3D type effects and dual PIP.

The GVI Indigo is designed to work with your cameras in full studio configuration.  Camera video monitors, audio mixer, microphones, studio announce speakers and IFB (talent earpiece) communication are a few of the console’s features.  These bring a level of control often missing from on-location TV productions, and can improve production quality while reducing post-production costs.

Also, have you heard about some of the surprisingly funny video modules produced by the Chapter in the 1990’s for the Annual MCA-I Video Festival “VidFest?”  Tom Anderson, along with Steve Panayioto, will present some gems from the past, including the “Star Trek” spoof, the “Dial V for VidFest” film noir knockoff, and others.  Tom will also have several  entertaining projects done by AIU-Buckhead students over the past few years, including a promotional trailer for Tyler Perry before he became such a big star!

Please RSVP to Don Glass (dglass@techrentals.com) or Donata Renfrow (donata@mindspring.com).

MCA-I meeting re-cap for January 31

We also thank Amy Shealy and John Ballinger from Canon USA for hosting us.  Our next meeting will be at AIU on February 28 from 6 - 8pm.  Stay tuned for updates.

The MCA Atlanta holiday party was held on Thursday, December 20, at Violette Restaurant on Clairmont Road.  33 people attended and feasted on such goodies as grilled tuna, sliced roast chicken breast, French countryside pate, onion quiche, fruit and cheese platters and several desserts!  Thank you to the Violette staff for their gracious hospitality.  We also thank MCA-I Program Chair Donata Renfrow, who was responsible for the events planning activities.

We also enjoyed a presentation of photographs by Terry Thomas, recapping the Atlanta chapter’s meetings from 2007.  Thank you, Terry, for your talents and contributions to our Chapter.

The star of the evening was the new Red One HD Camera, on display for members to examine and marvel over.  Details about the camera and related accessories are available at www.red.com.

Also, we congratulate Atlanta videographer/producer Keel Heisler, who celebrated his thirtieth year in the business with a National Emmy Award.  Heisler won for his outstanding camera work on “Paula’s Home Cooking.”  The program, starring Paula Deen, aired in HD on The Food Network.  The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences recognized Heisler’s contributions in the Outstanding Lifestyle Programming category during the Daytime Emmy Awards held earlier in 2007.

An Atlanta resident since 1980, Heisler helped launch CNN, setting standards for quality videography and production during the early days of the network.  He left CNN in 1988 to start Script To Screen Productions, and remains a busy, respected member of the Atlanta production community.  Heisler can be reached at 678-557-4886, or stsvideo@yahoo.com.
